Peace Boat- the organization
The 74th Global Voyage Staff on our last day
From July 19th, 2011, to November 1, 2011, I went on a cruise around the world as a volunteer English Teacher for the NGO and NPO Peace Boat.
Peace Boat is a japan-based international organization that works to promote peace, human rights, equal and sustainable development and respect for the environment (www.peaceboat.org).
One of the ways they do this is through their global voyages. They have lectures onboard and tours that enables participant to interact with people and issues on a first-hand basis. I was part of Peace Boat's 74th Global Voyage around the world. We visited 22 countries, 23 ports in 106 days, while learning about various issues.

onboard Montessori Children's HouseI was also fortunate to be given the opportunity to teach English to children of ages 0-3 at the Montessori Children's House onboard. I encountered and learned about the Montessori philosophy and methodology. Read about my Montessori Teaching experience here. |
Traveling the world while learning about it
In 106 days, we visited 22 countries and 23 ports. It was an exciting opportunity to see the world while learning a lot about countries, cultures, people, languages and oneself. One thing that is unique to Peace Boat that I appreciated was the lectures that were given before visiting each country. Guest speakers were invited to hold several lectures about the country, culture, history, and issues revolving the area. There were countless lectures on various topics, and I truly enjoyed attending these and learning about new things when I was not teaching.
I also did a few lectures. I taught Swedish and did a lecture about Swedish culture, sights and food to the passengers before the boat approached Sweden.
Read more about this amazing experience here- my blog! I wrote my thoughts/impressions of the different ports etc etc in English and in Japanese.
If any teachers are interested in this opportunity, do not hesitate to ask me any questions!
