MacKay Center School- Spring 2010
Second Field Experience- Spring 2010
For my second field experience, I was placed in a grade 3 classroom at MacKay Center School: a special education school for children with disabilities. I met eleven amazing children and a wonderful teacher, and learned a lot throughout my three weeks there.
During the time I was there, I was fortunate to be able to learn how to use the Smart Board, and by the end of my placement, I taught a fraction unit in math using the Smart Board notebook software. In Language Arts, I planned a novel study, where we read "Vacation Under the Volcano" by Mary Pope Osborne.
I was also very lucky to be student teaching at a very busy time of the school year. The school production of "Wizard of Oz" went on so I helped making costumes and props with other teachers. We also had three outings, where I could experience the special routines involved during class trips.

Using the Smart board
The Smart Board was an essential tool in teaching at MacKay Center School. Students were engaged, and it also allowed for differentiating instruction. I learned how to use it in the beginning weeks, and by the end of my stage, I developed my Smart Board Lessons. Examples can be seen with the picture on the right!
The picture shows a lesson I developed for the fraction unit. Students came up and shaded appropriate fractions on diagrams, divided cookies to illustrate certain fractions, as well as dragged appropriate fraction toppings for a pizza order. As an extended activity, they designed their own pizza. This order was randomly assigned in the class, and students had to draw someone else's special pizza. We had great fun!

Halo Race
One of the field trips took the class to Mount Royal for a running race- many other schools from all over Montreal were there!
The students with physical disability had their own race around Beaver Lake, and the others joined the other schools. I ran the 2 km race with the boys.

Wizard of Oz Production
I was fortunate to be able to be part of many events happening at the school- one was their dance production of Wizard of Oz. I stayed after school to help with prop and costume making, and the final show turned out amazing! It was a great experience seeing how a show was set up as well as seeing how teachers collaborated amongst themselves.
