Context: My students were always coming back upset from gym class. There was crying, fighting, and just many unhappy faces.
Lesson: Focussed on "Power of Words", both kind and mean. We sat in a circle, and did an experiment with two apples. For one apple, everyone shared an incident someone said something mean to them- each person bounced the apple on the floor once after sharing their story, and passed it onto the next person. With the second apple, we all shared something nice someone had said about us- this time, we carefully and kindly passed the apple down. When we cut the apples up, the one with mean words had cracks: mean words hurt us inside, and the one with kind words were whole and unhurt.
After this activity, students were asked to create a Surprise Kind Hand for one of his/her peers. On each finger of the given hand, they came up with nice things to say to that friend.
